About BS2881:1989
BS2881:1989 Is the standard relating to the storage of medicines in healthcare premises. Officially titled “Specification for cupboards for the storage of medicines in health care premises” the act was published in July 1989 and covers both medicine cabinets and controlled drugs cabinets. Controlled drugs cabinets are also covered by additional legislation which can be seen by clicking on the button below.
BS2881:1989 covers a multitude of things relating to the storage of medicines in healthcare premises, however for our cabinets, both controlled drugs, and medicine, we observe the construction requirements and attack criteria. This British Standard does not specific any specific construction requirements such as material thicknesses or hinge requirements, only that the cabinet should:
The above points relate to security level one specified within the standards. This is the security level that our cabinets conform to as it is the most popular required security level.
There are two security levels above level one, these include points relating to the following:
- Attack with hammer and levers (levels 2 & 3)
- Attack with hacksaw (levels 2 & 3)
- Attack with hand drill (levels 2 only)
- Attack with battery powered drill (levels 3 only)
- Attack with flame torch (levels 3 only)
Over the years we have been selling cabinets that conform to BS2881:1989, we have never been asked for a level 2 or level 3 compliant cabinet. Level 1 is the standard for the vast majority of healthcare applications.
